Scale and strategic importance

The Long Thanh International Airport is considered the most ambitious infrastructure project in Vietnam’s history, often referred to as a “mega project of the century.” With a total estimated investment of over 16 billion USD and a planned area of more than 5,000 hectares, Long Thanh is expected to become one of the most modern international airports in Southeast Asia.

Phase 1 of the project will include one runway, one passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers per year, and a cargo terminal capable of handling 1.2 million tons annually. Upon full completion, the airport is designed to accommodate 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year, surpassing the capacities of many regional hubs.

Long Thanh Airport plays a vital role in Vietnam’s national aviation strategy. It will ease the chronic congestion at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and transform Vietnam into a key aviation hub in ASEAN, connecting Asia with Europe and North America.

Economic and social impacts

Boosting logistics and export-import

Long Thanh is planned with a dedicated air logistics center, connecting goods directly from industrial zones in the Southern Key Economic Region and the Mekong Delta to major export markets in the U.S., Europe, and Northeast Asia. This integration will cut transportation costs and time, enhancing Vietnam’s competitiveness in global supply chains.

Tourism and foreign direct investment (FDI)

With a future annual capacity of 100 million passengers, Long Thanh will significantly expand Vietnam’s tourism sector. Provinces like Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria–Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and Binh Thuan will benefit from surging international arrivals. Additionally, the project is seen as a magnet for FDI in hospitality, commercial real estate, and service industries, stimulating long-term regional growth.

Job creation and satellite urban development

According to estimates, the Long Thanh project will generate 200,000–300,000 direct and indirect jobs. Its surrounding area will host satellite cities, industrial zones, and commercial centers, reshaping the economic and social landscape of southern Vietnam.

Challenges in project implementation

Investment and timeline

With an enormous investment exceeding 16 billion USD, financing is a key challenge. The project relies on state budget allocations, ODA, PPP models, and foreign investment. Ensuring sufficient capital flow while maintaining progress is a critical test for Vietnam.

Technology and workforce

Building a state-of-the-art airport requires advanced technologies in construction, air traffic management, safety systems, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), and fire protection (PCCC). Vietnam needs both international collaboration and robust training programs for a skilled workforce.

Land clearance and environmental concerns

Covering over 5,000 hectares, Long Thanh affects thousands of households. Transparent and fair compensation, resettlement, and environmental protection policies are crucial to gaining public support and ensuring sustainability.
